Description

Set in a retro-futuristic alternate world where the entire planet is divided between two opposing alliances, "Casshern" is at once visually entertaining and dramatically profound. The earth is left diseased and polluted through a "great war." The geneticist Dr. Azuma vies for support from the government for his "neo-cell" treatment which can rejuvenate the body and regenerate humankind. His appeals for funding is turned down by the government leaders who fear that the new technology will threaten their entrenched powers. Driven to complete his work by a desire to save the life of his beloved wife, Dr. Azuma accepts an offer from a sinister militaristic faction. However, Azuma's "neo-cell" cloning experiment goes haywire after an accident, and a race of mutant humans (quasi-androids) is unleashed upon the world. Tetsuya, Azuma's son, volunteers to be reborn as the bionic warrior Casshern in an attempt to save the world, and to clear the name of his father. Casshern valiantly sacrifices his own humanity in order to attain the powers needed to defeat mankind's powerful enemies. Haunted by the memories of his slain mother and having to deal with the super robot that has absorbed his father's consciousness, Casshern must put aside his own emotions in a desperate bid to save the human race. Veteran photographer and music video director Kazuaki Kiriya makes his feature directorial debut with this film loaded with high-voltage eye candy. Includes two bonus disc containing the director and production crew interviews, and a making of featurette(s).

CASSHERN Thoughts 4

I absolutely loved the visuals in this film. If you like the cinematic style of anime, or the visual wizardry of THE MATRIX then you will find plenty to enjoy in CASSHERN. Each scene has a remarkable depth of texture. It appears, at times, almost like a surrealist art work rather than a film. The plot is very typical spiritual arguement against the futility of human conflict, but it is not a heavy handed plot device. Rather, it's there largely to provide impetus to the rapid-fire action scenes. While dark subjects are major themes in the film (violence, ethnic cleansing, the de-humanization of people) there is a thin thread of optimism throughout the film. I really enjoyed this and I would recommend it to anime fans of any stripe, as well as those with a taste for artfully crafted action cinema.

Something new 5

I was a little uncertain about ordering this. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. Some people says it's great, some people say it's not. so, I got it. It's a lot better than I had thought. I think it has a lot more action than it's been given credit. in fact, it's a little gory. I was confused at first. You definately need to watch this more than once. each time I watch it I see something new. You have to pay a lot of attention to everything little thing. The acting was very good, I thought. I actually started crying at times. It's very anti war, and you can see a lot of that message. it has remenents of WWII. I like the "old" look it has to it, not how we think of futuristic now. It comes with 3 DVDs. the first is the movie, which is a good 2 and a half hours. the second is the making of the movie, which is about 2 hours, and is very good. the third DVD is pictures of the scenery, costumes, and so forth. It's a very moving movie, and the subtitles are very good. I hihgly recommend it.

Beautiful - watch at least twice 4

The story was a bit difficult to follow the first time, but it makes more sense after watching it a second time. There is a lot of commentary being the film's beautiful cinematography. It's definitely worth seeing, though less sophisticated viewers may simply dismiss its story or be bored. Watch it with an open mind and pay attention to its many levels of story.
